General Travel Insurance Information
Travel Insurance is insurance to insure that your traveling
goes smoothly and as planned. Travel Insurance covers a variety
of things that could go wrong on a trip. For more information
on what it should cover look at the
What should it cover? section of this guide. If anything goes
wrong on your trip that can be fixed with money it is the
travel insurance's job to pick up the tab. It is also its
job to pick up the tab if for some medical reason your trip
has to be canceled. The travel insurance would cover the cost
of the trip and let you reschedule it some other time after
the medical problem has been taken care of.
Should I get Travel Insurance?
This is a question everyone has to ask. Is travel insurance worth the
cost? Travel insurance on most trips is very cheap because most of the
time nothing goes wrong and the trip goes perfectly as planned, but
when something does go wrong like: your flight is canceled so you can't
get to where you are going for another day, your baggage gets lost in
the flight travel and can't get to you for another day, or if you
get hurt on the trip. It's hard to just say, "Nothing is going to go
wrong on this trip so I don't need the insurance." because you never
know what might happen. If you don't mind going a day without your luggage
or missing a day of your trip and not getting reimbursed because your
flight was delayed then you should be fine, otherwise spending a little
money on travel insurance wouldn't hurt because compared to the cost
of the trip the travel insurance isn't going to change much.
What should it cover?
There are many things travel
insurance should cover to be worth what you are paying for it. One is
loss of baggage, in case your baggage misses your flight or gets lost
at the airport this should cover buying everything that was lost so
the amount of the coverage should cover the total worth of your baggage.
Another is travel delay, in case your flight is delayed this should
cover the cost of the hotel you were supposed to stay at that night
and generally the airport will supply you with a hotel room if you will
not be leaving until the next morning. Last is medical expenses, this
is optional and is in case you are hurt on your trip the amount of coverage
for this should be in the thousands. Other optional things travel insurance
could cover is emergency transportation and death and dismemberment.
Travel Insurance Catches
There is only one travel insurance catch to look out for and that is
the medical coverage because with most plans that is only covered if
you were hurt traveling to your vacation spot or home from it. This
means if you were hurt at the place you were vacationing, the travel
insurance would not cover it. Be sure to read all the fine print on
your travel insurance plan to look out for any other catches it may
have.
